Launching the annual Pitt Lecture in recognition of Lord David Pitt.

This event takes place in the British Library.

Historian David Olusoga gives a keynote speech reflecting on David Pitt’s achievements, how he has changed society, and the impact on racial and health inequalities over the last 50 years. The event considers how we take this legacy into the next 50 years, both for Camden and more broadly.

David Olusoga then joins an in-conversation with Darla Jane Gilroy and Cllr. Sabrina Francis – Cabinet Member for Young People and Culture.  Gilroy brings an insight into the life and legacy of her mother Beryl Gilroy and her personal and academic contribution to the discussion around legacy.

David Pitt, Baron Pitt of Hampstead (1913–1994) was a British Labour Party politician, general practitioner and political activist. Born in Grenada, in the Caribbean, he was the second peer of African descent to sit in the House of Lords, being granted a life peerage in 1975, and was the longest serving Black Parliamentarian.

David Olusoga is a historian, author, presenter and BAFTA winning film-maker. He is Professor of Public History at the University of Manchester, the author of books including Black and British: A Forgotten History, which was longlisted for the Orwell Prize, shortlisted for the inaugural Jhalak Prize and won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize. A children's edition, Black and British: A Short, Essential History was published in 2020. His television credits include Civilisations, Black and British, Our NHS: A Hidden History, A House Through Time and the BAFTA award-winning Britain’s Forgotten Slave Owners.  In 2019 he was awarded an OBE for services to history and community integration.

Professor Darla-Jane Gilroy is Reader and Associate Dean of Knowledge Exchange at the Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.
